And I dont want to spoil it for the people who havent seen it but it was a big let down and was very confusing.
Anyway in my opinion The Mysterons are way coller than those aliens.

Haven't seen 'war of the world', am not really into scifi in general. That and Tom Cruise annoys me.

They had weapons buried underground for millions of years yet with the vast subways and water and gaz pipes we dont notice them??? Ealy on in the movie there zaping away at us then an hour or so later they need all the humans they can get to use our blood for them to survive. And the 2 kids in it were very anoying.

On the War of the Worlds CD it tell you that 'beings' that are far 'superior' to us, watch the Earth with 'envious' eyes.
But I don't understand why the machines are BURIED UNDERGROUND, as on the CD it says that cylinders are sent from mars to the earth.
Has anyone notice a (sort of) similarity between the Captain Scarlet series and War of the Worlds???

I remember that the cylinders are sent from Mars and land on Horsall Common in Surrey, but I can't remember if they are buried by the impact or not...
Any similarity between CS and the War of the Worlds might just mean that the Andersons had read the book; H.G. Wells definitely got there first - in 1898 to be precise !
I got this from a website about the book:
There was a specific event that inspired Wells. In 1894 Mars was positioned particularly closely to Earth, leading to a great deal of observation and discussion. Italian astronomer Giovanni Schiaparelli had reported seeing "canali" on Mars, meaning "channels," but the term was mistranslated as "canals," leading to much speculation about life on the red planet. [Although scientists were able eventually to photograph what seem to be large stream beds on Mars, these are on a much smaller scale than the blobs and blotches which misled Schiaparelli into thinking he had seen channels.] One of the 1894 observers, a M. Javelle of Nice, claimed to have seen a strange light on Mars, which further stimulated speculation about life there. Wells turned Javelle into Lavelle of Java, an island much on people's minds because of the explosion there in 1883 of Mount Krakatoa, which killed 50,000 people and drastically influenced Earth's climate for the next year.
Wells became famous partly as a prophet. In various writings he predicted tanks, aerial bombing, nuclear war, and--in this novel--gas warfare, laser-like weapons, and industrial robots. It was his tragedy that his most successful predictions were of destructive technologies, and that he lived to experience the opening of the atomic age in Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Don't worry if your not a Tom Cruise fan, listen to the CD (or even better, read the book), you won't have to put up with him then :big grin
If think that the cylinders weren't buried - on the CD it says that the cylinder lids could be seen to unscrew - but I don't know if this is the case in the book (as I haven't read it yet)

The CD is about as faithful adaptation you're going to get of the original book (unless you've managed to see the other WOTW film that was made recently but never released in the UK - it was apparently somewhat bad), so yes, this happens there too...

What I couldn't remember was if the capsules were completely buried - I remember the CD saying the tops unscrewed - not having seen the film, I don't know what they've done about the landing of the Martian craft.
"The chances of anything coming from Mars are a million to one," he said.
Maybe even H G Wells can get it wrong? After all, what DID happen to Beagle 2?

I've heard/seen that (quote from the CD) in a fan fiction story i've read recently...
Can someone remind me what happened to Beagle 2 (as there been so many rockets (etc.) sent up into space recently)?

THAT IS the question... No-one knows. It disappeared out of existence...

I know we had a thorough and fascinating discussion on possible scenarios to explain its disappearance at the time - but that must have been on the Forum Mk 1 - as I can't find them here...
I think Beagle 2 vanished in 2003.

From what I can remember of our explanations and theories, they were far more exciting than the official one. Maybe the authorities are just playing down any Mysteron involvement?

I snivel like a baby every time I get to the heroic struggle and death of Thunderchild. And the song on the CD doesn't help!
My chief gripe about the new film was that it was relocated to the US. That drives me nuts! Did you know that Harry Potter was originally going to be Americanized when Spielberg was involved? I'd love to see their reaction if we decided to relocate Gettysberg outside Basingstoke.
Poor old Beagle. I so desperately wanted it to go right, if only for the fact that its creature LOOKED like a proper scientist! Alas, it was supposed to bounce and it didn't.
What always intrigies me is what cleaned off the solar panels for the American probe? <mental image of helpful Mysteron with duster and Mr Sheen>

Beagle 2 and Tom Cruise Mysteronisation or something much much worse?
"You will never discover the secret of the Mysterons"
Oh what the heck is with "We will be avenged?"
Shadow Of Fear
The manner in which Dr. Breck is killed at the telescope is remarkably similar to the death of an astronomer in The Avengers episode "From Venus With Love". Both are killed mysteriously while watching one of Earth's planetary neighbours (Venus and Mars).

I got the special collector's edition DVD on Friday. Considering when this was made, the colour and production qualities have held up extremely well to the test of time. In a nod to the book, the fact that England is under siege is mentioned in the film, even though it has been relocated to America. Excellent special effects and great acting. Pity Spielberg didn't just remake this version. It comes out as far superior to the modern film.
