I just can't imagine an ending where the Mysterons kill all of Spectrum, end of story. It would possibly one of the grimmest conclusions in all fiction, and while it would be unique, it just wouldn't be Gerry Anderson, would it?
I'm pretty sure that if AOC had ended with everyone dying, then everyone here would've been mortified. It's just that the actual ending is so cheesy that people may be driven towards the alternative. I hope I'm not being too assuming here.....
Nah. The series achieved its aim of being far grimmer and darker than any SM series that came before it. Best leave it at that.

More to the point, the "Attack on Cloudbase" statut as a dream episode became quite obvious at the second, third, fourth viewings - when you notice strange happenings during the course of the episode - like people acting out of character, or acting a little too much in characters. All those characters wearing with skin-deep emotions - something fishy was going on. And of course, it would have been hard NOT to notice Captain Black's presence as 'Doctor Fawn's assistant' right from the first viewing! AND Captain Blue would NOT recognise him?! Come on!
What *I* would like to know, however is *why* the Angel craft piloted by Symphony crashed in the first place... That happened BEFORE the dream sequence... So SOMETHING must have happened.
So, for all the above reason mention, I would say - let Spectrum live on! And continue the good fight!

As I said, I hated the whole "Attack on Cloudbase" episode, but Marion Woods wrote an interesting alternative take on it in a few scenes for her story "Synchronicity".
I suggest you read it! It's quite a treat!

It would also raise loads of questions about what happens next, which could of course pave the way for more stories.
Anyway the bad guys can't win. Flies in the face of every morality issue in history.
I actually like Attack, well right up until Symphony wakes up. Then it just sucks. The dream thing is a terrible copout.

However... Blue does admit he's in love with Symphony - and she is obviously in love with him - even if she's imagining his feelings...
Romance is in the air!
What more could you ask for? Except that nobody really dies...
There was some discussion of this on another thread... http://spectrum-headquarters.com/v-web/ ... c.php?t=31

Long may they live and continue to foil the dastardly plots of the beastly Mysterons!

Incidentally, I wonder if perhaps the onset of night has another interpretation connected with the approach of midnight - the hour at which coaches turn back into pumpkins. Does Symphony fear that Blue's love for her is a sham that will be exposed as all her friends lower the masks from their faces, one by one, to reveal their true selves before she flees from the ball? Is Blue himself wearing a mask? Or is he the only one who will be true to her to the end?
Should they all have died in an incident that patently wasn't a dream? No, I don't think so - but I think perhaps the episode could have been recast in a Prisoner-like ambiguous light that would have made us wonder whether the entire series was a dream. However, GA had something to say about that on the voiceover he did on the DVD set - something about it being necessary to reassure the young viewers that it wasn't real. And it was a kids' show, after all!

The stories could be placed between the events of The Mysterons and Attack on Cloudbase,,,

If you start including the adventures they have had in our multitudinous fan fictions too I am sure that the poor officers would never get any sleep, let alone find the time to enjoy the off-duty escapades they get up to... That's quite apart from stories that are deliberately set at times way in the future of the TV series - eg: 'Ghost in the Machine' which is set just before Captain Blue's 40th birthday...
No, as unsatisfactory as it is - Attack on Cloudbase is better left as a fantasy... although as Doc Brown suggests there might have been better ways of suggesting it wasn't true than that used. However, given the fact that the Anderson people only had 30 minutes (minus advert breaks) and it WAS a show for Children - they didn't do too badly and I still like the episode, for all its faults.
Besides, if ever I crash in a desert and hallucinate the end of all things, I hope I get woken up by two such good-looking men

I wouldn't count on that General Ward to actually be successful against them...
But thankfully, it's only a dream

Seriously, Spectrum does seem to be Earth's only hope, and I wouldn't fancy our chances if the Mysterons DID succeed in bumping them all off! I don't really think I'd be much good against them.
