Live or Die?

The dream ending was - as Gerry said and was quoted in earlier posts - to reassure the target audience - children (including me at the premier) that it wasn't really that scary.
And face it - Gerry did the 'dream ending' years before 'Dallas' - which was the show that really did gave that particular cliche a bad name...

World President
"I can also exclusively reveal, that by a strange twist of fate, the eventual trajectory of Probe Omega terminated on... Mars.” The World President paused a short instant, and the people and the hall waited expectantly for him to continue. “The blast of the collision was noted by every observatory on Earth. It is expert opinion that thanks to Spectrum the voice of the Mysterons will be silent for some considerable time to come."
A much better ending if you ask me and it leaves it open for a possible second series.

I always considered Inferno to be the final episode, which perhaps it was during the 1993 reruns (don't remember seeing the inquisition, which was probably a good thing)

It isn't the best episode to end on - I agree- especially as the 'flashbacks' they chose to use don't actually show very much nor do they explain in the case of 'Big Ben Strikes Again' (or whatever its called) how Captain Blue knew everything that happened - like Black lurking in the shop doorway...
Maybe they didn't realise it was to be the final episode? It has been remarked elsewhere on the forum that ITV have not broadcast the new series in the order the episodes were produced - so maybe they didn't back in the 1960s either?

But IMHO, I'm glad it was just a dream, there wouldn't have been any subsequent sequels, comics or fanfics otherwise!

The surreal parts of the story would work well too. Just because it's surreal, it doesn't mean it wouldn't work. Anyone seen the finale of The Prisoner - Fall Out? My point exactly.
All of these factors have a deeper meaning, and would have made the series much deeper than any other Anderson series.
I'm sticking to my guns - the events of 'Attack On Cloudbase' should have been portrayed as real.
