Mary Sues?
Moderator: Spectrum Strike Force
I have never consciously tried to base a character on someone I know, although I may have borrowed names from friends or family. However, the fact that I feel I "know" how my characters will react in a given situation ( and not always to their credit, thus hopefully avoiding the Mary Sue scenario ), probably reflects on my experience of life and people in general. I'm sure we all absorb a lot more influences than we are consciously aware of.
It's been said before elsewhere on this forum - the first rule of most creative writing courses, is "write about what you know." I assume that includes people too, so even if we can't exactly tap into our personal experience of life in Spectrum World, we can certainly make good use of our experience of human nature !
