Help: writer's block
Moderator: Spectrum Strike Force
I want to write some fan fiction but have several problems:
I have an idea of what 2 write but then come up with alternative ideas, that then leads to a 'writers block'.
I also have a problem with actually writing my ideas on paper (or typing them on the pc)
Can someone please help me?!

Hi,
Just a couple of thoughts here.
Too Many Ideas?
As they pop up, write a brief outline of each one in a file or document kept just for that purpose. If you've got the basics written you can go on with the story you're writing then look into your new ideas at a later date. If they are suggested scenarios for the story you are currenlty writing, list them in dot points at the end of the document (use a different colour or font so they won't end up accidentally incorporated into the plot!) Review them as you go - you should soon work out which ideas are worth persuing and which ones won't fit.
Putting the Story Down
One thing I've found useful is you don't necessarily have to write the story in order. As ideas come write them, then you can come back and start pulling them all together then putting the story in the right order. This is especially useful if you've started a story and can't figure out how to end it. At the most inopportune time the ending might occur to you (life is like that, alas). Don't dither about writing it down! Put it down on paper ASAP - while it is fresh in your mind.
The Boring Technical Stuff
It pays to make use of a thesaurus or a dictionary - I've been stuck with awkward sentences or phrases which have stopped further ideas dead. Sometimes it seems as though I won't get any further until I fix the problem! I've found by looking for alternate ways to say things or in fact, the correct words to say something, that killer block can just vanish and I'm off typing again. Don't get too flowery with the language though - overuse of the thesaurus can turn a good sentence into something pretty ghastly - or worse - a dramatic moment that unaccountably degenerates into high comedy.
I hope this might be of some use - but it's probably better to get advice from the experts!
