How indestructible is Scarlet?
Moderator: Spectrum Strike Force
Does Captain Scarlet have enhanced tissue muscles, and is literally invulnerable, or does one bullet affect him like any normal man, but he always comes back due to his retrometabolism. I mean people say he can survive explosions and falls from greats heights, is this just acclerated healing or is he literally indestructible, (or close too)?
Thanks for your time

As Dr. Fawn puts it in episode 1 of OCS...
'A bullet will make you bleed...you will feel the pain...'
So, things that could possibly, or probably, even certainly, kill people like you and me, only injure him, though it will hurt. Pretty horrible really...
I still think he could be, for instance, sealed under ice, and his body would never be found. He would be as good as dead if he could not break free.
Hope this helps!

However, like other Mysteron duplicates, he is impervious to X-rays, and is vulnerable to electricity. Ergo, Spectrum is a little apprehensive about Scarlet going into situations where electricity may be involved.
The one exception to this was in "Operation Time". He was on the operating table, instead of General Tiempo. However, it was determined that the electrical impulses from a Cerebral Pulsator was insufficient enough to permenantly kill Scarlet.

In fact - in the Doctor Brodsky adventure - Blue isn't sure Scarlet would have survived the blowing up of the concert hall, either. But then, Blue always worries too much about whether Scarlet's gonna make it or not .
(my apologies - I never can remember the titles of those stories ... )

But is he more durable than an ordinary human, or does he just have accelerated healing, or possibly a Healing Factor, like many superheroes. I mean some people with fan fiction say he can heal from very bad wounds, but it takes a while.
Would a bullet heal in seconds, minutes, hours or even days?

I think that a bullet wound would take more time depending on how fatal the wound would be in a normal human. For instance, shot in the arm; three quarters of an hour? Shot through heart; three hours?
Just a little thing: In a New Captain Scarlet episode, Scarlet breaks both his legs. He says he will 'get them back' in a couple of days. I should think the same applies to OCS.

I will have to check on my references books, if there wasn't any amount of time proposed for a recovery. I'm not sure, but something like 'six to seven hours' to recover from a death wound seems to have stuck in my mind, from something I read some times ago. It might be only in fanfic.
I'll come back soon with that.

There are many theories about why this happens and several of them are discussed in this thread... ..

The nature of retrometabolism is just one of the many aspects of the Captain Scarlet series that is open to debate and every theory is a valid one.
I have to agree with Chris that NCS varies from the original series about retrometabolism. There they say it is something to do with changes to the DNA and the fact that Scarlet went to Mars, and was the first chosen agent of the Mysterons, makes the nature of his original death and retrometabolism different from that of the man they attacked on Earth.

Yeh i've heard a bullet would kill him, but he will always come back with a replicant copy of himself. But if something doesn't kill him, then he heals really quickly.
I mean could he regenerate a lost eye or a severed hand?, i know he can in fan fiction but would his hand or eye stay severed until he died and a new copy of Scarlet was made, or would it just simply grow back?

Actually, Scarlet has been replicated ONCE, in the first episode, when he was originally replaced by the Mysteron copy of himself. He has not the capacity of making other copies of himself, nor does he do so when he dies, after that. It's always that same second body which is retrometabolising (or healing, take your pick) itself.

Your thoughts on this are as good as mine - or as anyone else's. As Marion said, the nature of retrometabolism is open to debate and all theories are valid
Fanfic authors generally used that media to present their theories - and what makes it exciting, is that there are so many possibilities that can be explored - provided they are presented and explained comprehensibly and in an acceptable way!

And Chrisbishop, thanks for telling me that he only replicated once, i thought he possibly may have been able to do it a few times, i think they should create some new episodes CGI or original style and show how far his healing abilities work!
Thanks again!!

This has always puzzled me. Okay, so he was killed falling from the Car-vu, and in the car crash... But that isn't several times is it?

Or is it after he has died his retrometabolism still works as long as his body is still in one piece, so he can make him breath again?
