Thunderbird 2 prototype (was: Any LightWave 3D users here?)
Moderator: Spectrum Strike Force
A year ago I posted some desktop wallpapers that the fabulous Dave Cook put together for Spectrum Headquarters - Since then I've been toying with the idea of giving you guys and gals something else to play with.
Way back when I was working for Scarlet Digital I got permission from Michele Fabian-Jones to release some of the 3D assets online here at Spectrum HQ. In addition, I was given permission at the time to release some of the 3D assets for inclusion on the LightWave 3D content CD (a disc full of free-to-use content that comes with LightWave). Well, SDI kinda vanished so I didn't know whether to go ahead or not.
It's been over a year now though and since the show and its associated marketing is seemingly (and sadly) history, I can't see the harm in making them available now.
Over the next week I'll be putting together a downloadable version of the actual Bison 3D model I created for the NCS episodes 'Dominion' and 'Duel' - you'll need a copy of NewTek's LightWave 3D or Luxology's modo to tinker with it (both have downloadable demos that'll do from http://www.newtek.com and http://www.luxology.com).
I'm planning (with Chris' permission) to make this available for a week only here at Spectrum Headquarters - I expect to post a date for the download to be made available once I've got a .zip ready.
Hopefully some of you New Captain Scarlet fans will get some enjoyment out of it

Yes, that is a very interesting post indeed!! Do you work in the industry or do you have contacts there?
I certainly hope that a relaunch is probable rather than just possible. Without giving anything away could you put a percentage on it - 50%-50% maybe, or is that being too optimistic?
By the way, you are not the same Lieutenant Green who used to send out the Spectratech email messages are you or was that Mark Sherwood?

No, I'm afraid not. If that were the case maybe I would have a lot more to tell you. I'm also not in the TV industry.
All I would suggest is that the best way to handle any news of this kind is to just generally wait and see.

Any idea how long we have to wait and see for?

Just contact me as usual, and we'll see what we could do.

In the meantime - here's a prototype of something I was working on for GAP just prior to them running out of money (and forgetting to pay me )
http://www.survivorsdiary.com/TB2/PodDoorsTest.mov (needs Quicktime) 1.5mb
http://www.survivorsdiary.com/TB2/TB2_Test.mov (needs Quicktime) 4.6mb
I'm planning on posting the models for these too (whenever I get the time...)

Wow, that's amazing stuff. I hope one day we do get to see a new Thunderbirds show. It's certianly fuelled my desire to see a new show!

I hesitate to say I 'designed' it as obviously, a lot of the design is inspired by the amazing work done on the original TB2 but yeah - I came up with this reworking of it.
My thinking was that I wanted to stay pretty faithful to the original but create something a little sleeker and meaner - kind of a cross between the classic TB2 and a stealth bomber. Because it's quite thin when viewed from the side and really wide when viewed from above, it presents all kinds of different profiles when you see it in motion which I think visually is very interesting.
I stuck with the original colour scheme and markings (with some slight changes to accomodate the redesign and a new International Rescue logo) but the version you see here isn't fully textured so you don't see things like wear on the leading edges and panelling like the original TB2 had - I hope to finish it off at some point.
Other features of the redesign included much sturdier landing legs which unfold out of the pod doors. The pod itself is a two-stage affair with the outer shell opening to hydraulically deploy an inner pod - this allows TB2 to leave the inner pod behind and re-seal the outer one to maintain its aerodynamic profile - I'll post some more pics when I have a chance to explain it a little better
At the back, the new TB2 has four afterburning engines which are designed to propel it to the necessary speeds to engage the scramjets - with such a heavy aircraft, they're used for takeoff too. The 4 VTOL (vertical takeoff/landing) jets are sealed flush to the hull whilst in flight and are only visible when TB2 takes off or lands. Size-wise, this version of Thunderbird 2 is around 1.5 times the size of the original. It also has a lot of emergency equipment built right into the hull including water cannons and floodlights. In case of attack by hostile forces, Brains has also built in countermeasures including chaff, flares and aerial EMP (electromagnetic pulse) mines.
Edit: Oh, and to the best of my knowledge, no - I don't think Gerry's seen this. As I was developing this for GAP/SDI, I don't know if he'd be thrilled to see it anyway but all the same, it would have been nice to know what he thought - David Lane really liked it though

Wow, seems you've thought of everything! Guess if they'd used this version in "Terror in New York City" it wouldnt have got shot down! Well done indeed! I really disliked the movie version, I thought the 'spoiler' at the back and those engines were horrible! This version is really good stuff though I'm glad to say!
