Are plasma baths a cure?
Moderator: Spectrum Strike Force
I'm brand new to this forum and indeed any forum so apologies in advance for any mistakes!
I'm writing some NCS fiction and, being a science graduate, it really bugs me if I can't come up with a plausible explanation for the science behind the story.
So does anyone have any clever theories about why Captain Scarlet is de-Mysteronised when he falls through the plasma stream in NCS Series 1 Ep 1? And does anyone else find it interesting that the Mysterons start to lose control of Black when he is trapped under thick ice in NCS Series 2, Ep "Best of Enemies".
Would love to see a debate on this one. Thanks for your interest!

The plasma stream is an interesting idea but one has to wonder if it was solely responsible (I hate absolutes ) but - and I'm sure either of the Docs on the forum will correct me - doesn't plasma set up an ionisation that interferes with the electro-magnetic spectrum? (I vaguely recall early tests with lasers in open atmosphere causing plasma ionisation that effectively rendered the beam useless, or at least reduced its power... ) so perhaps there's the inkling of a theory there...

I didn't pick up on the Rhino being shielded - good point!
If you didn't think falling through the plasma stream was the only reason for Scarlet's de-Mysteronisation, what other reasons could there be? That Paul's psyche exploited the Mysteron's temporary loss of control over him to reassert itself?
I seem to remember that Lt Green's father's psyche does temporarily regain control of his replicant but I'll have to watch that episode again to see if EM radiation is involved.
Here's another one: do you (or anyone else in the forum) believe that there are two types of replicant? The first type is like Scarlet and Black, possessing superhuman strength and regenerative properties, able to draw on past knowledge, experience, memories and emotions. This is the 3D model, the fully-rendered replicant. The other type is like a drone - a greyscale copy, as it were, simply able to do the Mysterons' bidding but not capable of much else, easily deleted when it serves no further use.
Because I keep wondering why the Mysterons don't simply delete Scarlet or switch him off as they seem able to do with other replicants. Any thoughts?

There certainly does seem to be two different methods of Mysteronisation in NCS; one resulting in an indestructable clone like Scarlet and Black (amongst others), where the personality of the original seems to remain pretty intact; the other being more like hypnosis, where the subject remains more human-like, but loses the personality of the original.
From what we've seen, the Mysterons only seem to create an indestructible clone if he/she is required for a long period of time (e.g. Scarlet & Black) or if they have a specific job that requires indestructabilty. I would expect that the process of recreating an individual requires a lot of energy, and so those that don't require the level of detail for an indestructible clone are more simple reconstructions in order to save energy.

Probably because he isn't under their control any more. A bit like a missile in that you have a self-destruct switch, but if the missile can't receive the instruction for whatever reason, it won't work! The Mysterons have probably tried to just dissolve him like they do with any expended clone and it hasn't worked.

I don't have any reason, any more than I do for the original series...

I always thought that was a ploy on behalf of the Mysteron, but each to their own...

Well the danger here is believing the Mysterons are limited by the same scientific boundaries we are. The process was never made clear originally, beyond the generalisation 'reconstruction of matter', and the same is true with NCS. Presumably the Mysterons have to observe the same laws of physics, but even we are aware, though we don't have control over, various 'get-outs' which seem to occur in things like quantum dynamics.

Well it would be a very short series if they did! You have to consider the laws of television formats, as well as those of science!
