NCS versus Who!
Moderator: Spectrum Strike Force
When the two programs were on the same day I always found myself liking NCS better. Threre is so much that is good about Doctor Who but there are things that I had problems with.
The first episode "Rose" really set the tone for me and as I thought that story did nothing right apart from the development of Rose and the Doctor, it took me longer to accept the new series. From there it got better. I am not a big fan of a producer or director hitting viewers over the head with their political agendas as Russell T. Davies has. His view on what Doctor Who is rubs me the wrong way at times.
Example - Rose gets mad at the Doctor for forgetting her boyfriend's name right after she learned of his potential death. She can't believe Mickey is dead but seconds later is running across the bridge sporting the best smile.
RTD is trying to make Doctor Who fun and in several episodes made the characters less real.
Now, with that said, the series did end stronger and the two part "The Empty Child" and "The Doctor Dances" are incredible pieces of TV. Those stories really fired on all levels. I have to say that story is better than anything NCS had but with more time for characterization and to tell the story, it does have an advantage.
The rest of the DW episodes were too inconsistant while NCS was.
Now, David Tennant in the Children In Need special a couple of weeks ago was incredible and so perhaps the second season will settle down a bit.

To which I would reply - Yes, you do need to say more, if you want to make whatever point you're trying to make clear....

I think DanDud88 was quoting someone else on the SFX forum called Colbell: http://forum.sfx.co.uk/viewtopic.php?p=12190 , (the Philistine!)

Apologies - I didn't read the entire screen on the link and therefore didn't realise from your post that you were actually quoting someone else.

Just a thought - maybe NCS is 'getting creamed' because - outside of the aficionados on this forum - the general SciFi community doesn't rate it as much as other SciFi shows and re-imaginings?
NCS has to make it on it's own merits - weighting the voting isn't going to help.

I think it's more likely that a lot of people haven't had the chance to see it.

That's the impression I got from reading the SFX thread. If people have seen it they only seem to have seen a few episodes.
Let's face it, you have to be pretty dedicated to sit through MoM just to watch a 20 minute 'kids' show with a 5 minute gap in the middle; I expect the only people that will have seen NCS on TV are the kids that watch MoM already, and the die-hard adult fans who would sit through ANYTHING to watch an episode. Probably not the majority of the SFX readership.
Still, I think it's worth adding a comment to the thread it if it encourages a few more people to go out and buy the DVD!!

The average SFX readers are 20 something guys*, with varying degrees of scifi geek tendencies .
So they're definetly outside the target audence for NCS .
Have to wonder though, is it necessary to have seen more than a few episodes to form an opinion on a show and want to keep watching it?
MoM did such a diservice to the show.
*according to the magazine's media pack.

Can't see that myself.
The action, style, mood and pacing are, to my mind, very akin to movies aimed at just that age group.

There are plenty of people who watched the show, formed the opinion that they liked it, but then didn't keep watching it because of how it was scheduled.
