A Fox's Thoughts On TNCS CGI
Moderator: Spectrum Strike Force
To be very honest I liked the episode "Manhunt" as it was revealed that the Mysterons where capable of compasion. In my eyes it left the possibility that even Captain Black after all the deeds he did on behalf of the Mysterons could be redeemed somehow. The New Black seems to be fully undercontrol of the Mysterons and I'd be hard pressed to find any milk of human kindness within him.
I'm probably asking for trouble but what the hey

I like it so much that it's actualy quite difficult for me to go back and watch OCS now.

I personally think the new Captain Black is far more interesting. That's not to say the original was not any good - he was just very different in his brooding, almost always silent 'Angel of Death' way. Consider how actor Donald Gray struggles to do a compromise between the flat TV Mysteronised voice, and something more interesting, on the mini-albums.
I was sold on the NCS Black as more interesting from the first story, where we see him as a friend of Scarlet before becoming a Mysteron, and in his later scenes with Destiny. And he has continued to grow in my esteem, due in no small part to the excellent scripts and Nigel Plaskitt's wonderful voice characterisation.
Frankly, I think comparisons are pointless - despite the similarities, they are quite separate entities. But while i don't think much more could have been done with the OCS Black, i yearn to see more of the NCS version...

NCS Blue is pretty good as well, was very sceptical about there being changes to him (am such a groupie for OCS Blue) but can appreciate both. Think their personalities may be kind of merging together in my fanfic.
I like both Colonel White's about the same. There are diffrences but they have pretty much the same spirit. Think of NCS White is more of a father figure, then OCS White who was definetly the stern boss.
Do agree they should have made new female characters, rather than rehashing original ones. Stupid thing is they went to all that effort but that Angels (Destiny aside) are pretty much non entities. Might have been better to have just better developed them for a female angle.
I try to look at them as seperate entities and not make comparisons. So can see the merits of NCS, but shall always be a true devote of OCS. Just because you never forget your first love.

I agree abso-fragging-lutely 100%.
The two series are two completely separate entities. both start from the beginning. Alternate realities/universes if you want.
I would also like to see NCS do at least another couple of seasons. I liked it from the first, but then I am one of the heretics who like both OCS and NCS

I always wanted OCS to be like the end credits and the comic stories. Instead, while you can't fault the stories, the acting is necessarily wooden. Remember Captain Scarlet coming in for a ragging on the moving walkway? Done purely to avoid the puppet having to walk but boy, did it look silly, even then. And how about all those off screen footsteps where characters invisibly walked across the set? Well, with the magic of CGI (and mocap), we can now see the characters, walk, run, fight and do all the things they couldn't do before but that we wished they could.
I think the character revisions work extremely well. Black is much more like the comic version, rather than a monotonic zombie. There's still a hint of humanity there, just to keep you guessing, even though he's quite diabolic most of the time. Blue has turned from Superman into Batman, if you understand the reference. Ochre is still Ochre, yet female and so is Green, to an extent. Scarlet himself is more rounded and aware of his new existence, as well as exhibiting a touch of the humour that was mentioned in the OCS biography but was seldom seen. Destiny? Well, you can't win em all....
As for the vehicles, now that they're not made from balsa and left over Airfix, they've turned into something quite fantastic. Come on, just how cool is that Rhino? And Skybase? WOW!
I don't know what I'm going to do with my Saturday mornings now. It was a series cut short in its prime.

It is the kids you have to please these days to make a cartoon work, not the fans.
At least people are watching it, and during the premiere of the first season, it had excellent ratings for a cartoon. Things could be a lot worse. Prime example being the GI Joe comic book. This is something mainly read by fans. Kids just are not reading comics these days. And at an average £2.20 a pop, who can blame them. Intitial sales on the Devil's Due run in excess of 70,000 copies. Two months ago, averageing 20,000. This is what happens when something is made primarily for a fan base. Make changes and all hell breaks loose. Fortunately, NCS was made for a consumer market and not the fans, otherwise it would have failed at the first.
