Who is the Mysteron Captain Black?
Moderator: Spectrum Strike Force
I had an idea for a short Valentine's Day story that focuses on the replicant Captain Black. When I thought about it in more depth, I realised it was going to be a challenge I might not be equal to. It has to be written, not necessarily in first person, but certainly from Black's point of view. Then I realised I didn't know what his point of view was - does he even have one? To get it right, I need some clue as to who he is now that he's no longer human. We know he retains memories and can think as a rational person, but what about emotions? Yes, he displays a certain sense of humour in a dastardly, pantomine villain sort of way, but that's about it. There are one or two episodes where he shows some vulnerability ( notably 'Best of Enemies' and 'Dominion'), but for the most part, we don't get much of a sense of how he functions as a Mysteron replicant.
Most of the replicants are created for a purpose and then are finally destroyed fairly quickly. Black's role in the War of Nerves and his relationship with his masters is clearly totally different. So what is his relationship with them? What's the level of communication and how do they do it? Do they leave him alone when they don't actively need him to carry out a threat? How does he live in the meantime? What does he do for accommodation and money? How does he get around? Because he seems to turn up everywhere like a bad penny, it seems reasonable to assume that he's using some kind of Mysteron teleportation, something like OCS Black did when he was seem to simply disappear in some situations.
I wonder what Black does with his time when he's not actively engaged in combat. When I watched the episodes again, I was struck by the fact that there are quite a lot in which he doesn't actually appear. It's obvious that the Mysterons don't use him in every single threat. So what happens in the meantime?
To make this story plausible, I am going to have to try to work out all these things to my satisfaction and that may not happen! Perhaps other forum members would like to offer up suggestions and opinions? I think it might make for an interesting debate, as the more I've thought about it, the more I realise what an intriguing and complex subject it is.
